Welcome to Nazareth!
At Nazareth Lutheran Church of South Brisbane, we believe that we are saved 'by grace, for Christ's sake, through faith'. In other words, there is nothing we can do to earn God's favour or to gain eternal life. Through his death and resurrection, Jesus Christ has won all this and more for us.
We believe that God created the universe and everything in it and that he created humans as the crown of creation and as moral beings for a life of worship and service to God (Isaiah 43:7, Psalm 100). We believe that only the Bible is the source of inspiration and teaching. Lutherans worldwide also believe that the Lutheran Confessions, contained in the Book of Concord of 1580, are true expositions of the word of God. Our church community includes members from many different cultural and ethnic backgrounds. Some of our members live nearby, while others come from all around the Brisbane metropolitan and regional areas. Our congregation has a long history. The Nazareth Lutheran Church was established in 1862 in the sparsely settled area of early colonial South Brisbane. Nazareth Lutheran Church has existed for 160 years under two names and at two locations. Key features of Nazareth Lutheran Church are the strong bonds of friendship, rich Christian fellowship and the love and mutual support that exist even in the worst of times. Our church is grounded in a shared faith, a desire to grow in that faith, and intense loyalty to the congregation. Today members of our community continue to share a faith that is as relevant today as when our congregation was founded in 1862.Our church is grounded in a shared faith, a desire to grow in that faith, and intense loyalty to the congregation.
As part of our mission, Nazareth provides:
- Nazareth Residential Aged Care – pastor and others lead a weekly devotion each Friday
- Naz Court – independent living units
- Men's and women's groups
- Children's Chapel - Pastor leads a weekly Children's Chapel at the Nazareth Early Learning Centre
- Spaces for the community to gather and hire.
Through these ministries, our congregation reaches out and enjoys rich interaction with multicultural and multigenerational groups, interactions that are as important for our congregational members as they are for those beyond its boundaries.
A range of congregations worship at Nazareth at various times during the week, in daytime and evenings, including the African Church of God, the Finnish Lutheran Congregation, the Latvian Lutheran Congregation, the Swedish Lutheran Congregation and the Fijian Congregation.
We proudly support Mary and Martha's Refuge, a place for families seeking refuge from family violence. Mary and Martha Refuge is a domestic violence safe house started by Nazareth in the 1970s before being taken on by the Queensland District of the LCA and relocated. Our donations supply bedding for the women and children who come to Mary and Martha's for refuge.
